2015 Takeover Target Stakes Winner Ball Of Muscle Breaks Track Record

January 10th, 2015

Four-year-old Ball Of Muscle registered the biggest win of his career on Friday with a dominant win in the Listed Takeover Target Stakes (1200m), breaking the Gosford Racecourse track record in the process.

The Joseph Pride-trained gelding was $2 firm favourite to win the 2015 Takeover Target Stakes at Ladbrokes.com.au and didn’t disappoint.

Ball Of Muscle jumped well from barrier five under Glyn Schofield with the John O’Shea-trained Barbed taking the lead early – something Schofield opted not to do this time around, settling just behind the leader instead.

At the 800 metre mark Hugh Bowman made his attack with That’s A Good Idea ($13), making an aggressive turn around the outside. The pair traded the lead back and forth within the final 200 metres but Ball Of Muscle crossed the line a nose in front with a new track record of 1:08:96. Jarrod Austin’s Territory ($18) rounded out the first three.

Pride was thrilled with the win from Ball Of Muscle but admitted to being nervous after the gelding failed to take the lead out the gate.

“I didn’t like it in the end and I didn’t want to be there, but he showed a bit of versatility there today and a toughness to hang on,” Pride said.

“It was an exciting race, there were a few tactic changes there, but thankfully we came out on top.

“It was a good tough win, full credit to the opposition there, but I think my bloke was just a bit too big and too strong.”

Schofield won his second race of the day after riding Mamwaazel to a narrow victory in the previous race – the Group 3 Belle Of The Turf Stakes (1600m). The hoop scored his fifth win from as many starts aboard Ball Of Muscle but admitted the Listed grade may be the gelding’s peak at this stage.

“I know that he is a high class horse, he hit a bit of a blip last start over 1200 and he set track record time today, but he only just fell in,” Schofield said.

“I suppose at this stage of his career that is probably his limitation.

“We were running along at a good clip and when Hughie whipped around me I knew that we would have something to chase.

“I know that That’s A Good Idea is a hard horse to get past and I only just managed to get past him.”
