Maroney Avenue Seeks 2013 Takeover Target Stakes Victory

January 8th, 2013

Maroney Avenue will be looking to recover his winning form when he runs in the Takeover Target Stakes at Gosford racecourse this Thursday January 10, 2013.

Trainer Rodney Northam is hopeful the five-year-old can rebound from his sixth placing behind No Looking Back in the Listed Carrington Stakes at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse last start.

“The Carrington was a little bit disappointing on face value but he got stitched up on the first turn,” Northam said.

“That got him over-racing and checking off heels. He came back with some speedy cuts (as a result of striking himself) and he was bit lame on that leg.

“It was the first time he had raced in a high-pressure race and he just didn’t cope so the experience out of it should help him.”

Prior to the Carrington Stakes, Maroney Avenue had won all six of his race starts and had earned close to $70,000 in prize money during his horse racing career.

Northam admitted the loss came as a bit of a relief, with the pressure of remaining unbeaten becoming too much for the trainer.

“In one way it is a bit of a relief he was beaten because while it is good to keep horses in winning form it comes with a lot of expectation,” he said.

Maroney Avenue has twice won over the 2013 Takeover Target Stake’s distance of 1,200 metres and is perfectly poised to take out the win.
